Decision Marketing Proposal
At a high level, the main determining factor for TI is where they should spend time and effort to help profit and loss numbers. On a lower level, TI utilizes a hierarchical structure to make decisions. The size of the hierarchy depends on how much market share they have for each product (again going back to P/L). For example, since software is a smaller portion of TI’s overall products (as opposed to hardware), they have a smaller branch office in Santa Barbara with only three tiers of management in that office that reports to one person at headquarters. Within the hierarchy, the manager Wechsler has had to handle conflict that arises due to the decisions made above him. When this happens, Wechsler shares the reason for some of the controversial decisions made by his bosses to his team. He finds that his team may not always like the plan, but if he can explain the “why” behind them, his team will buy in and work hard.
Like the textbook says “when this belief is not challenged during key discussions, those in positions of authority may trust themselves to make the choice without soliciting the opinion of others” (Katz 2004)
