The law enforcement now days have to use military style tactics for the simple fact, people today have to respect for our law enforcement officers, because of the social media and news only showing the one side of the bad guy getting his butt handed to him after standing off with officers, they don’t show the moments before when said suspect showing his butt displaying erratic behavior. That being said this in return gives the public a negative attitude towards law enforcement which forces them to have to be more tactical and military style. I don’t blame them at all, I would want to go back home to my family so I would stand with whatever it takes to stay safe.
Perhaps I will sound overdramatic making a case about how “militarized” the modern police departments have become or even why. I say this because I feel that the military zone, we are now faced in this country, is on the streets of the United States and not necessarily always in another country. We have gangs and we have potential terrorists among our midst.
Yes, we have become militarized for one reason because technology has advanced to the state of technology-driven equipment such as what is used in SWAT units, the use of assault weapons and other equipment that is necessary to combat crime on our streets. I am not sure where everyone lives in this class, but I can see in the outskirts of the greater Seattle/Tacoma metropolitan area, military-type equipment is a necessity to not just fighting crime but for the protection of the police force.
I lost a brother at age 42 in the Hartford Connecticut police force. He is a fallen hero. This is the number one reason I am in the criminal justice master’s program. As I see it, the streets are a war zone. Long gone are the days of “Car 54, where are you?”. I feel we have some serious problems in this country with our lax attitude toward crime and allowing criminals to run free because they have “rights”. I have worked in communist countries and a militarized police department should never be a fear of people. Even in Russia where I have worked, it is not the police to fear but their neighbors who are the spies among them. The police in Russia do not walk around in their Russian military uniforms threatening people. And Russians actually respect their police force. We sometimes do not. Thanks for listening.
